case description

The user interacts with the “Helsinki in a Snap” mobile App by accessing to the Environmental and Weather information of the city: weather forecast, air quality heatmaps (specific view on Jätkäsaari), air quality sensors, weather heatmap, predictions from Enfuser, prediction from GRAL, general services, participating in the forum discussion, providing comments, ranks, etc. The users can: (i) be informed about the environmental and weather conditions in real time; (ii) be notified about critical conditions, (iii) observe the values in specific points, (iv) discuss with other users about these facts, (v) rate or mark as favourite one or more services, (vi) take decisions and provide suggestions to city for improving his life and the city life in general.  

      

 

case goal

Improve the understanding of the environmental conditions and improve quality of life.

  • Be aware about the environmental and weather conditions and forecast in real time;
    • Subscribe to one or more alert services attached to environmental or weather values associated with heatmaps (real time and predictions);
    • See specific views for Jätkäsaari island;
    • Picking the value of an heatmap in a specific point by mouse
    • select manually on the map or move in another location and get the new values of the environmental and weather variables in that point;
    • select the single sensor and get the specific values collected from that sensor;
  • saving and recall the activities performed as a personal register
    • Saving and accessing to Favourite sensors, getting values, shortcut;
    • access to chronology of the activity performed on the mobile App;
  • Share a comment on the in-App Discussion Forum;
    • Provide suggestion to the community of users and to the city.
  • Access to personal data on the portal via the Mobile App or PC browser.
  • Filling the assessment survey

Access rights

The user can download and install the App from the Google Play store, providing his/her own name and password selecting as profile “Citizens” or “Tourist”.

 

Pre-test conditions

The user:

  • has a smartphone with Android or iOS (not yet but close to have);
  • has installed the “Helsinki in a snap” mobile App. At the first usage the registration is performed using the mobile App.
  • may spend time in Helsinki and may be in the Jätkäsaari for using the Mobile App and reporting experience via an “in App Survey” or via an “OnLine Survey”.

 

Post-test conditions

The user, to complete the experience, has to:

  • Perform the following step-by-step actions, the App is going to track the activity
  • Fill the in the in-App-Survey or the online survey: The survey is the last point suggested in the Goal Experience described below.
  • The city Officials can stay connected on the forum to listen about the comments coming from the city users.
  • The City Officials can take advantage of the information collected and can act to improve the city conditions and be aware about eventual causes of discomfort.

 

Test-scenario (incl. step-by-step actions)

download and install the App

  • Open the “Helsinki in a snap” mobile app
  • Login with your username and password
  • Be aware about the environmental and weather conditions and forecast in real time;
    • In the main page of the app, click the “Environment and Weather” icon ;
    • Click the icon of interest among the following:
      • Weather forecast to see forecast weather and wind direction;
      • Air Quality Heatmap shows real time values of pollutants in the area.
        • On the bottom part of the screen: values of different pollutants are shown with a coloured level that is higher or lower according to the pollutant concentration. By clicking the value of interest, the corresponding heatmap is shown on the upper part of the screen with the different colour gradient representing the concentration of the selected pollutant according to the colour map;

        • See also the Heatmaps of DISIT lab GRAL predictions
        • Click the different values on the bottom part to see the corresponding heatmaps. Zoom in and out on the map;
        • Tap in a different position in the map to set the black pin. It represents a manual GPS position. Click the tree icon on the bottom part of the map to update the pollutants values according to the new position;
        • Click a green pin in the map. Each pin represents the position of an air quality sensor. By clicking a pin, the corresponding pollutants values will be shown on the bottom part of the screen.
      • Air Quality Sensor shows the position of air quality station in the area and the corresponding values are shown on the bottom part of the screen;
        • Click a green pin in the map. It represents the position of an air quality sensor. By clicking a pin, the corresponding pollutants values will be shown on the bottom part of the screen
      • Air Quality Heatmap for Jätkäsaari with the same meaning of above data and mechanisms.
      • Weather Heatmap;
        • On the bottom part of the screen, real time values of Temperature and Humidity are shown with a coloured level that is higher or lower according to the value concentration. By clicking the value of interest (Temperature or Humidity), the corresponding heatmap is shown on the upper part of the screen with the different colour gradient representing the different values.
        • Click the different values on the bottom part to see the corresponding heatmaps. Zoom in and out on the map;
        • Tap in a different position in the map to set the black pin. It represents a manual GPS position. Click the tree icon on the bottom part of the map to update the weather values according to the new position;
        • Click a green pin in the map. Each pin represents the position of a weather station. By clicking a pin, the corresponding weather sensors values will be shown on the bottom part of the screen
  • Subscribe to one or more alert services attached to environmental or weather values associated with heatmaps;
    • In the main page of the app, click the “Environment and Weather” icon;
    • Click the icon of interest between Air Quality Heatmap and Weather Heatmap;
    • Select a value of interest on the bottom part of the screen, for example PM10 or EuropeanAQI for pollutants, or Temperature for Weather;
    • Once selected the value of interest, click the “Notification” orange button to activate alerts. In case the value exceeds the limit, a notification will be shown on the smartphone;
    • Please note that you can subscribe to ENFUSER predictions, Jätkäsaari heatmap data, GRAL predictions as well
  • Saving and accessing to Favourites sensors, getting values, shortcut;
    • In the main page of the app, click the “Environment and Weather” icon;
    • Click the icon of interest between Air Quality Heatmap and Weather Heatmap
    • According to your selection, click a green pin in the map representing a Weather Station or an air Quality Station. By clicking a pin, the corresponding weather sensors values will be shown on the bottom part of the screen
    • Click the heart icon to mark the service as favourite
    • A confirmation message will be shown. Click OK to confirm;
    • Select other pins on the map and mark them as favourite as described above;
    • Click the Home icon on the left bottom of the screen to return to the main page of the app;
    • Click on the My Activity icon  and then click the Favourite button  to see the list of services you marked as favourites;
  • Access to chronology of the activity performed on the mobile App;
    • If you are not in the main page of the app, click on the Home icon on the bottom left of the screen;
    • On the main page of the App, click on the My Activity icon  and then click the Chronology button  to see the list of services selected in the past.
    • Click the Empty button  on the bottom of the screen, to clean the chronology.
  • Share a comment on the in-App Discussion Forum;
    • If you are not in the main page of the app, click on the Home icon on the bottom left of the screen;
    • On the main page of the App, click on the Forum icon
    • The webpage of the App discussion forum will be open
    • Scroll down and write a Subject and a Comment in the Add new comment area;
    • Click Save.
    • The city Officials can stay connected on the forum to listen about the comments coming from the city users. The City Official can provide correct information if in some cases the discussion would go assuming wrong information.
    • The City Officials can act to improve the city conditions and be aware about eventual causes of discomfort.
  • Access to personal data on the portal via the Mobile App or PC browser.
  • Filling the assessment survey
    • If you are not in the main page of the app, click on the Home icon on the bottom left of the screen;
    • Click on the Assistant icon ;
    • The HELP US item in the list will ask to leave a Feedback on experimentation. Click Reply and complete the survey
  • The user can do a quite similar experience by using the Web version of the App with some limitations on the GPS located services according to their internet provider.
