EV charging stations are becoming unavoidable services for sustainable cities and they are growing rapidly in diffusion. Due to their wide diffusion, charging stations are becoming smarter in offering additional services useful for the city and decision makers, for example by integrating environmental sensors, tv cameras for security, wi-fi access, etc., and for understanding people flows and origin destinations.

ENEL X, the Italian largest provider of demand response worldwide and products and services aimed at energy transformation at home, city and industrial level, installed in the MIND (Milano INnovation District) Smart Poles for e-bike and Smart shelters for electric vehicles aiming to demonstrate IoT capabilities for devices of common usage.

Thanks to the support of SNAP4 company and by exploiting the Snap4City capabilities, public web dashboards showing the harmonized data collected by the sensors present on the devices have been implemented, also by showcasing analytics data related to the EXPO area in Milan. The solution demonstrates the possibility to make effective use of sensors’ data coming from smart recharging stations by providing decision support tools based on data related to: energy consumption with respect to the energy produced by the integrated PV panels, people and vehicle counting and tracking, parking monitoring, e-bikes and e-cars recharging sessions monitoring, people counting on the basis of the Wi-Fi connections, video analysis for people counting and to detect the presence of people in forbidden areas or un-appropriate people behaviour. The solution also integrates information regarding the use of the integrated SOS requests system and of the integrated Automated External Defibrillator (AED) life saving device.

Moreover, a business intelligence tool for analysing the data related to the presence over time at the Milan EXPO area has been implemented. On the basis of the actual historical data available about people presences, people proveniences and people origins/destinations, a visual tool has been implemented by exploiting the Snap4City technology. The smart application developed represents in a map the visual analysis of the data in details allowing to navigate in the data with a most satisfactory experience, enabling decision makers to have an insight into the data related to the presence of people in the EXPO area. An effective tool allowing to support decision makers for urban services planning on the basis of the real demand, through an estimation of the presences of people and mobility flows.

The implementation of the solution based on Snap4City technology demonstrated the importance of providing an integrated solution for smart city operational system and as well a collaboration platform. ENEL X and SNAP4 provided a real solution to help cities to accelerate their smart city development and thus have a chance to meet the Sustainable Development Goals, SDG, challenges arising with the quickly growing urbanization.
